Classroom instructor-led training
Though viewed as old school by some, instructor-led classroom training offers the greatest potential for interactivity between presenter and audience. Further, when being conducted by an experienced instructor, it is the context that allows for the highest degree of flexibility in adjusting to the exhibited needs of the participants. That is true whether the mid-course adjustments are based on a recognition of the energy of the audience, bringing about a better alignment of the level of sophistication at which a subject is best addressed relative to the audience’s ability to absorb the information or giving the instructor the ability to perceive that a portion of the training group has not grasped a specific bit of program content.
Mr. Carroll brings that suite of skills along with an energetic, interactive presentation style. His varied experiences in sales, trading and investment management allow for a broad range of professional exposures to be drawn on to connect training session content to attendees' day-to-day activities. His hands-on experience in the markets is supplemented by a rigorous grounding in the legal, regulatory and theoretical aspects of the financial markets gained while earning numerous professional licenses and pertinent college degrees, including master’s degrees in finance and economics.
Mr. Carroll has been conducting investment-related training seminars in major financial centers around the globe for more than two decades. He is adept at working effectively with diverse audiences in a variety of contexts; audiences and topics have run the gamut from “Capital Markets Overview” for industry neophytes to “Advanced Derivatives” for portfolio managers and trading desk personnel; comfortable delivering presentations to large audiences as well as conducting one-on-one or small group tutoring.
Virtual instructor-led training (live)
For many employers, especially those with workforces dispersed over numerous locations, classroom sessions are not the most optimal way of meeting training needs. Though not permitting the same degree of interactivity between instructor and participants as when in the same classroom, virtual instructor-led training can entail a good amount of interaction between audience and trainer while enabling participation by employees from numerous locations, including multiple time zones or continents.
Nearly any program delivered by an instructor to an audience in a single classroom can be provided virtually. However, there are a number of issues related to constraints imposed by technology that must be taken into account when designing programs that will be delivered virtually. Generally, the pace at which content can be covered is a bit slower (approximately 2/3 the rate of speed) so the number of topics to be covered, amount of detail or length of program must be adjusted accordingly. Also, the ability of participants to concentrate for as prolonged a period is not as great. Consequently, unlike classroom training where full days is not unreasonable, normally 3 or 4-hour sessions would be a maximum length of training per day for optimal effectiveness when using a virtual training format.
Digital training content (pre-recorded)
DAITAC has an inventory of existing digital training resources and has the capability of designing and developing digitally recorded training programs tailored to the clients’ specifications.
The existing stock of digital training programs is comprised of eight Fixed Income-related modules, each approximately one hour in length. Together the eight modules represent a comprehensive overview of the fixed income markets. However, the sessions can be purchased individually or in packages of less than the full consignment. Individual session titles are listed below.
Coaching/mentoring/tutoring (1 on 1 or small group)
In many instances, the specific information needs of industry professionals can be addressed much more efficiently in a consultative Q & A context compared to the information and insight they would obtain by participating in class presented to a large group.
A 1-on-1 or small group setting maximizes flexibility regarding the content under discussion, ability to expand or contract time devoted to specific issues and entails the capacity to deepen or completely drop issues in a way normally not possible in a large group training context. Each session can be tailored to the specific information needs of the participant(s). The design can consist of a straight question-and-answer format, a guided discussion of the topic(s) of interest or flow back and forth between Q&A and guided discussion.
Delivery can either be in person at your site (office/conference room) or at my home-office location (Hoboken, NJ). Sessions can also be done virtually using whatever technology (e.g. FaceTime, Skype, etc.) or software (GoToMeeting, Adobe, etc.) is mutually convenient.
Self-study programs (video, PowerPoint and/or text-based) with assessments
Often the most flexible means of training a large and geographically dispersed workforce is via individually consumed self-study programs. DAITAC can design self-study regimens to match client goals. Depending on client preference, they can be video, PowerPoint (with voice-over and animation) or text-based. The programs can be constructed from the existing stock of recorded digital programs, created de novo to client specifications or be developed using a combination of both.
Responsible administration of self-study programs of information dissemination requires a mechanism for monitoring participants’ completion of the mandated courses and an assessment of the degree of success at which the information content is being absorbed. One of the most efficient ways of accomplishing both simultaneously is via progress checks obtained via exercises/quizzes administered over the course of the program and final exams being administered at the completion of the program.
Qualifying/assessment examinations
Assessing the effectiveness of training is an integral element of impactful training solutions. Whether for DAITAC-developed training programs or programs developed by other vendors or internal training departments, DAITAC can create examinations designed to assess the absorption of information by program participants. The degree of difficulty can be adjusted to reflect client objectives. The assessments can be more cursory in nature if the primary goal is just to assess participants’ ability to internalize general issues such as recognition of distinguishing features of financial markets or instruments and related industry jargon. Conversely, assessment examinations can have a distinctly more rigorous characteristic, requiring detailed knowledge of the specified financial instruments and their trading/risk management applications as well as the ability to apply such knowledge in a sophisticated fashion.
Mr. Carroll has an extensive background in test question writing and qualifying exam design. He has designed examination for a variety of professional training companies and their clients as well as while he managed investment training units at Citibank’s U.S. retail broker-dealer and its global Private Bank. Mr. Carroll also spent over 5 years on the New York Stock Exchange Series 7 item writing committees, participating in both the regional committee in Chicago and the main committee in NYC
